Teaching Our Son We Have Names Besides Just "Mom" and "Dad"

efficientlymomming

For those who have read some of my other posts, you know I love to put important information to music to help it be easily remembered. It’s so much easier to remember things when they have a catchy little tune behind them.

At home, my husband and I don’t ever really use our names. We call each other “babe”. When we are talking with our son, we use variations on “mom” and “dad” for each other. If Rio is ever in a situation where someone asks what his mom’s name is, or what his dad’s name is, I wouldn’t want him to say, “Mommy” because that isn’t going to help him in an emergency. I love the title “Mommy” and all variations thereof, but it’s not my legal name so it will only get everyone so far.

One of my favorite bands is Death Cab for Cutie. They have songs that are so soothing and lovely. My favorite song is, “Soul Meets Body”. The song that I made up for him to know our names lines up with how the lyrics of the song begin, so it goes like:

My mommy’s name is Allison Pineda. (This lines up with “I want to live where soul meets body”.)

My daddy’s name is Rolando Pineda. (This lines up with “And let the sun wrap its arms around me.”)

My name is Rio Pineda. (This lines up with “And bathe my skin in water cool and cleaning and feel”. The last syllable gets drawn out a bit with our family name version.)

We have a dog named Hazy. (This lines up with “Feel what it’s like to be new.”)

This way, we make sure that our son knows our legal names and not just our titles and what we call each other, which could come in handy in case of an emergency. Please let me know if you want me to help you put your family members’ names into a song; I’m always more than happy to help.

(And here's an adorable family picture from when we had his newborn photos taken by Korto Photography.)
